One of the most common questions we get is “where is the rafting point?” Rafting in Rishikesh does not start in town. You report to the operator’s office (ours is at Tapovan on Badrinath Road), and the team drives you upstream along the Rishikesh–Badrinath highway (NH-7) to the starting beach. You then raft back down to the town, finishing near NIM Beach below Laxman Jhula. The river distance and the road distance are different, so here are both in one place:
| Starting point | Road distance from Tapovan | Drive time | Rapids | Finish point | Price (per person) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brahmpuri | ≈ 7 km | ≈ 25 min | 4–5 | NIM Beach / Laxman Jhula area | ₹800 |
| Phool Chatti | ≈ 10 km | ≈ 30 min | ≈ 5 | NIM Beach / Laxman Jhula area | ₹1,000 |
| Shivpuri | ≈ 14 km | 30–40 min | 7–9 | NIM Beach / Laxman Jhula area | ₹1,000–₹1,500 |
| Marine Drive | ≈ 23 km | 45–60 min | ≈ 13 | NIM Beach / Laxman Jhula area | ₹2,000 |
| Kaudiyala | ≈ 34 km | ≈ 1 hr 15 min | 16–19 | NIM Beach / Laxman Jhula area | ₹3,000 |
Coming from elsewhere in town? Add about 5 km from Triveni Ghat or Ram Jhula, and about 6–7 km from Yog Nagari Rishikesh railway station or the ISBT bus stand, to reach our Tapovan office. Distances are by road and approximate; the drive to the start is included in the price.
Which river is it? All of these routes are on the Ganga. The river takes that name at Devprayag, about 70 km upstream, where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda meet; that is why our longer expeditions start on those two rivers.
Age and weight limits depend on how big the rapids are on each stretch. These are the limits we follow for the 2026-27 season:
| Stretch | Age limit | Weight | Swimming | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brahmpuri (9 km) | 12+ with a parent or guardian | 30–100 kg | Not needed | Families, first-timers |
| Phool Chatti (12 km) & Shivpuri (16 km) | 14–60 years | 30–100 kg | Not needed | Most groups |
| Marine Drive (26 km) | 14–60 years, good fitness | 30–100 kg | Helpful | Active groups |
| Kaudiyala (35 km) | 14–60 years, strong fitness and prior rafting | 30–100 kg | Recommended | Experienced rafters |
| 84 km expedition | 16+ years | 30–100 kg | Recommended | Fit adventurers |
Families with children 12–14 should choose Brahmpuri. If you’re unsure which limit applies to your group, the safety section below goes into more detail, or just ask us on WhatsApp.
Rafting runs every day of the season in fixed batches, and every raft has to be off the water by 5 PM. Report to our Tapovan office about 30 minutes before your batch for kit-up and the drive to the start.
| Stretch | Departures from Tapovan | Time on the river |
|---|---|---|
| Brahmpuri (9 km) | 8:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:30 PM, 3:00 PM | 1.5–2 hrs |
| Shivpuri (16 km) | 8:00 AM, 12:30 PM, 2:30 PM | 2–3 hrs |
| Marine Drive (26 km) | Morning and around midday | 3.5–4 hrs |
| Kaudiyala (35 km) | 8:00 AM only | 5–6 hrs |

While river rafting is a thrilling adventure sport, following proper safety guidelines ensures a secure experience. White World Expeditions follows international safety standards on every trip. Here are essential safety measures:

Always book with Uttarakhand government-licensed rafting companies that have certified guides, proper insurance, and quality equipment. White World Expeditions is a registered operator following all safety regulations.
Never skip the pre-rafting safety briefing. Pay attention to paddle commands (Forward Paddle, Back Paddle, Left, Right, Hold On, Stop, Get Down), emergency procedures, and what to do if you fall in the water.
Always wear your life jacket (PFD) and helmet correctly. Ensure they fit snugly and are properly fastened before entering the raft. The life jacket keeps you afloat even in turbulent water.
Be honest about your swimming ability, fitness level, and any medical conditions. Choose a route that matches your experience. Always sign the liability waiver form before departure.

The depth changes with the season and from spot to spot. Near the beaches and gravel banks it can be knee-deep, but in the main current and in the pools below big rapids it is well over head height, so you will not be able to stand. That is exactly why a fitted life jacket is compulsory: it floats you whatever the depth. The water is also cold for most of the year, because the Ganga is fed by Himalayan snow and glaciers.
Is it dangerous? Like any outdoor adventure sport, rafting carries some risk, but with a licensed operator, trained guides, safety kayakers and proper gear, commercial rafting in Rishikesh is considered safe for healthy beginners. Most accidents involve people swimming in the river without a life jacket, unlicensed boats, or alcohol. Pick the right stretch for your group, listen to the briefing, and you are in safe hands.
Packing the right items ensures comfort during your Rishikesh rafting adventure. Here’s a comprehensive packing list recommended by White World Expeditions:
Rafting takes half a day, so most of our guests add a night in the hills. Some easy ways to build a 2-day trip around it:
Swimming is not mandatory for beginner routes (Grade I-II) as you’ll wear a high-quality life jacket that keeps you afloat. However, basic swimming knowledge is recommended for Grade III+ routes. Non-swimmers should always inform their guide beforehand. Thousands of non-swimmers safely enjoy rafting in Rishikesh every year!
Minimum age is typically 12-14 years for day trips (varies by route). For the 9 km Brahmpuri route, children 12+ can participate with parental consent. For multi-day expeditions like the 84 km trip, minimum age is 16 years. Maximum age is 50-60 years for challenging routes if in good health.
Absolutely! Rafting in Rishikesh is completely safe for women and solo travelers. White World Expeditions welcomes all guests and ensures safe, professional experiences. Women-only groups and international travelers are very common.
No. Rafting is officially closed during monsoon season (July to mid-September) due to extremely dangerous water levels, flooding risk, and safety concerns. The season runs from mid-September to 30th June. All operators comply with Uttarakhand government regulations.
A standard raft accommodates 6-8 people plus one guide. Smaller rafts for 4-6 people are also available. White World Expeditions ensures proper group sizes for maximum safety and fun.
Don’t panic! Your life jacket will keep you afloat. Float on your back with feet pointing downstream to protect yourself from rocks. Keep your head above water and arms spread for balance. Wait for your guide’s instructions or the rescue rope from the safety kayaker. Never try to stand in fast-moving water. This is covered in detail during the safety briefing.
Only if it’s waterproof and securely attached. Operators provide dry bags for valuables, but it’s safer to use photography services offered by guides or rent a GoPro. White World Expeditions guides can capture your adventure at a negotiated price.
By Air: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (35 km, 1 hour drive)
By Train: Haridwar Railway Station (25 km, 45 min drive) or Rishikesh Station

While walk-ins are possible, booking in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak season (March-June). You’ll get better rates, guaranteed slots, and proper planning. For multi-day expeditions and camping packages, advance booking is mandatory. 50% advance payment confirms your booking.
For most day stretches in Rishikesh the age limit is 14 to 60 years. Children aged 12 to 14 can raft the gentle 9 km Brahmpuri stretch with a parent or guardian, while the 35 km Kaudiyala stretch needs good fitness and some rafting experience, and multi-day expeditions such as the 84 km trip need rafters to be at least 16.
Yes. Rafters should weigh between about 30 kg and 100 kg so that the life jacket fits properly and the guide can pull you back into the raft quickly. If someone in your group is close to the limit, tell us when booking and we will advise on the right stretch.
Rafting starts upstream of Rishikesh at beaches along the Badrinath highway: Brahmpuri (about 7 km from Tapovan), Phool Chatti, Shivpuri (about 14 km), Marine Drive (about 23 km) and Kaudiyala (about 34 km). You report to the operator’s office in Tapovan, are driven to the start, and raft back down to finish near NIM Beach below Laxman Jhula.
All rafting in Rishikesh is on the Ganga. The river gets its name at Devprayag, where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers meet, so longer expeditions from Rishikesh also raft sections of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi before joining the Ganga.
Rafting runs daily in fixed batches from 8 AM, and all rafts must be off the river by 5 PM. Brahmpuri has batches at 8 AM, 11 AM, 1:30 PM and 3 PM, Shivpuri at 8 AM, 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM, Marine Drive in the morning and around midday, and Kaudiyala only at 8 AM.
Rafting in Rishikesh closes every year on 30 June for the monsoon and reopens in the second half of September. The 2026-27 season opened on 23 September 2026 and runs until 30 June 2027, with short pauses on days when heavy rain raises the river level.
Depth varies by season and spot. It can be knee-deep near beaches and gravel banks, but in the main current and the pools below rapids it is well over head height, so you cannot stand. That is why certified life jackets are compulsory for everyone on the raft.
Rafting carries some risk like any adventure sport, but it is safe when you book a licensed operator with trained guides, safety kayakers and proper equipment. Most accidents involve people swimming in the Ganga without a life jacket, unlicensed boats or alcohol, not organised commercial rafting trips.
The longest single-day stretch is the 35 km Kaudiyala to Rishikesh run (from ₹3,000). For longer trips, White World Expeditions runs multi-day expeditions: 84 km Ganga Raft Expedition from ₹18,000 + GST, 104 km Alaknanda and Ganga expedition from ₹28,000 and 112 km Bhagirathi and Ganga expedition from ₹30,000 per person.
Carry a government photo ID such as Aadhaar, a driving licence or a passport for every rafter. It is needed for the government entry slip at the start point, which costs about ₹20 per person. Minors should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
From the 2026-27 season, certified Type-V life jackets and helmets are compulsory for every rafter and guide, only trained and registered guides with first-aid and CPR training can lead rafts, and experienced guides can now work up to age 60 with an annual medical fitness certificate.
