River Rafting on the Brahmaputra – India’s Ultimate Adventure
River rafting in India on the mighty Brahmaputra River is considered one of the most thrilling and challenging rafting experiences in the world. Known as “Burlung-Buthur” by the Bodo people of Assam, the river is called Yarlung Tsangpo in the Tibetan Plateau.
The Brahmaputra originates from the Angsi Glacier on the northern side of the Himalayas in Burang County. Earlier, the source was believed to be the Chema-Yungdung Glacier, identified by geographer Swami Pranavananda in the 1930s.
According to updated research led by Liu Shaochuang from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the river stretches approximately 3,848 kilometres (2,391 miles) with a drainage area of about 712,035 square kilometres. These measurements were refined using modern expeditions and satellite imagery.
From its source, the river flows for nearly 700 miles (1,100 km) eastward between the main range of the Himalayas to the south and the Kailash Range to the north. In its upper reaches, the river is widely known as Tsangpo, meaning “Purifier,” and is also referred to as Yarlung Zangbo in Chinese.
Today, river expeditions on the Brahmaputra are regarded as one of the best rafting experiences in India, offering powerful rapids, breathtaking landscapes, and unforgettable wilderness adventures
