Is Rafting Open in Rishikesh Today? 2026-27 Season Status & October Guide

Is rafting open in Rishikesh? Yes. The 2026-27 season opened on 23 September 2026. But “open for the season” and “running today” are not the same thing. Three days after the launch, a red weather alert paused every raft on the Ganga. After 22+ years of guiding on this river, I’ve learned that the people who get a good trip are the ones who check the river, not just the calendar. This page is our dated, running log of the 2026-27 season. It covers what is open, what isn’t, why, and what October 2026 looks like on the water. We update it whenever the status changes.

2026-27 Rafting Status Log: Every Change, With Dates

Most pages that answer “is rafting open in Rishikesh” were written once and never touched again. This log records every official change to rafting in Rishikesh this season, with the date and the source. Newest entries are at the top.

Date Status What Happened
1 Oct 2026 Weather-dependent Monsoon withdrawing. IMD’s extended-range forecast for Uttarakhand shows “large deficient” (very little) rainfall for 2-8 October, after a very wet final week of September.
30 Sep 2026 Weather-dependent IMD expects the monsoon to withdraw from the rest of north India within 2-3 days. It forecasts only isolated rain in Uttarakhand on 30 Sep-2 Oct and 5-6 Oct.
26 Sep 2026 ⛔ Paused The administration and tourism department suspended rafting “until further orders” after a red alert, continuous rain, and a rising Ganga.
24 Sep 2026 ✅ Open The first rafts of the season were back on the water.
23 Sep 2026 ✅ Season launched Rafting season 2026-27 inaugurated at Shivpuri. Uttarakhand Tourism issued 45-day temporary licences to rafting firms.
19-20 Sep 2026 Survey A Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board team surveyed the Ganga from Marine Drive to Nim Beach and found water levels suitable to begin with the short routes.
1 Jul 2026 ⛔ Closed Annual monsoon closure began after the 2025-26 season ended on 30 June.

What a “pause” means: the season itself stays open. A pause is a short safety stop, usually one to three days, until the river drops back to safe levels. It is the most common reason people find rafting “closed” in late September and early October.

How Rishikesh Decides Whether Rafting Is Open

Rafting doesn’t reopen on a fixed date. It reopens when the river says so, and several people have to agree on that first. Knowing how the decision is made helps you judge your own dates.

1. The river survey

Before each season, a technical team from Uttarakhand Tourism runs the river and checks the water level, current speed and the state of each major rapid. In 2026 that survey ran from Marine Drive to Nim Beach on 19-20 September. In 2025, officials said rafting could restart once the Ganga at Rishikesh settled around the 338-metre mark. That figure gives a sense of the threshold the team is looking for.

2. Licences for every rafting firm

This season brings a real change. Rafting firms are now licensed under the Uttarakhand River Rafting/Kayaking Rules, 2014. They start with a 45-day temporary licence issued on 23 September 2026, and permanent licences follow once the full procedure and fees are complete. On its launch day, the state also announced Wilderness First Aid and CPR training for 700 river guides, with more than 300 already registered with digital certification on the Tourist Guide Portal.

What this means for you: ask any operator for their current licence before you pay. An operator without one cannot legally run your trip, and you have no protection if something goes wrong. We explain how to vet an operator in our rafting safety guide.

3. Daily weather and river checks

Even mid-season, the district tourism office can stop rafting for the day if the weather department issues a red alert or the Ganga rises sharply after upstream rain. That is exactly what happened on 26 September 2026. These orders apply to every operator equally.

Recent reopening dates

2026-27 season Launched 23 Sep 2026; paused 26 Sep for weather
2025-26 season Reopened 27 Sep 2025 after about 2.5 months of monsoon closure
Rafting season window (per state rules) 1 September to 30 June. The actual start depends on the river survey.

The pattern is clear. If you’re planning a trip for late September, treat it as a “probably”. From mid-October onwards, it’s a “very likely”.

Which Rafting Routes Are Open in Rishikesh Now

Routes open in phases, starting with the shortest stretches closest to Rishikesh. As the water drops, the longer, more powerful sections upstream follow.

Route Distance Phase Status (1 Oct 2026)
Brahmpuri to Rishikesh 9 km Phase 1 Opened with the season; runs when the river isn’t paused
Phool Chatti to Rishikesh 12 km Phase 1-2 Follows the short routes; confirm on the day
Shivpuri to Rishikesh 16 km Phase 1 Opened with the season; runs when the river isn’t paused
Marine Drive to Rishikesh 26 km Phase 2 Opens once the survey clears it; expected during October
Kaudiyala to Rishikesh 35 km Phase 2 Opens once the survey clears it; expected during October
84 km Ganga Expedition 84 km, 3 days Phase 3 Runs after the upstream stretches are cleared; ask for dates

Our advice: if you’ve set your heart on the 26 km or 35 km stretch, book for the second half of October or later. If you’re travelling in the first week of October, the 16 km Shivpuri rafting trip is the safest bet. It’s our most popular run for a reason, with Roller Coaster and Golf Course as its headline rapids.

How to Check If Rafting Is Open in Rishikesh Today

Search results can’t tell you what the river is doing this morning. These four steps can:

  1. Ask a licensed operator on the morning of your trip. Suspension orders reach rafting firms before they reach the news. Message our team on WhatsApp and we’ll confirm the day’s status.
  2. Check IMD’s Uttarakhand warnings. A red or orange alert for Tehri Garhwal or Pauri Garhwal, the districts the rafting stretches pass through, is the clearest early sign of a pause.
  3. Look at the last 24 hours of rain upstream, not in Rishikesh. A sunny morning in Rishikesh means little if it poured overnight in the hills. That rain reaches the rafting stretches within hours.
  4. Search local news for “राफ्टिंग पर रोक” (“rafting suspended”). Hindi papers such as Amar Ujala usually report closure orders the same day.

Coming from Delhi? Rishikesh is a 5-6 hour drive. Confirm the status the evening before and again before you set off. A two-minute call can save you an empty trip.

Rafting in Rishikesh in October 2026: What to Expect

Our month-by-month rafting guide rates October as the best month overall. Here’s how that plays out in October 2026, week by week, using this year’s forecast and holiday calendar.

Week River & Weather Crowds Our Pick
1-4 Oct Monsoon withdrawing; river still high and fast after late-September rain Very high: Gandhi Jayanti long weekend (Fri 2 to Sun 4 Oct) 9 km or 16 km, booked in advance, and confirm on the day
5-11 Oct Isolated showers possible on 5-6 Oct per IMD, then settling Moderate on weekdays 16 km Shivpuri; good value weekday slots
12-20 Oct Stable flow, clearer water, beaches reappearing High around Dussehra (Tue 20 Oct) Marine Drive 26 km if cleared
21-31 Oct Most reliable river of the month; cooler mornings Moderate Kaudiyala 35 km or a rafting + camping weekend

Why October is special on the Ganga

  • Post-monsoon water: the river carries more volume than in spring, so the rapids feel lively without June’s raw snowmelt power.
  • Cleaner river and beaches: the monsoon floods flush the riverbed, and the white sand beaches that disappear in summer start to reappear. That makes October one of the best months for camping in Rishikesh.
  • Clear mountain views: the air is washed clean after the rains, making it a favourite month for photographers.
  • Something for every group: first-timers, families with teenagers, college groups and corporate teams all find a route that suits them.

How October compares with late September

Factor Late September October
Chance of a weather pause High (monsoon tail) Low, falling through the month
Routes available Short routes only Short routes, then long routes as the water drops
Rapid character Pushy and fast, with debris possible Powerful but more predictable
Best for Flexible travellers, experienced rafters Everyone, including first-timers

October Weather & Water Conditions in Rishikesh

Daytime air temperature About 28-31°C (warm and sunny)
Night / early morning About 16-19°C, cooler by late October
Water temperature About 16-20°C (fresh but comfortable)
Rain Occasional showers early in the month; mostly dry after that
Wetsuit needed? No for most of October; useful for long routes on cool late-October mornings

Temperatures are typical ranges for the valley. They shift a few degrees from year to year. This October has started warmer than normal: IMD recorded maximum temperatures 1.3-2.0°C above average in late September.

Comparing prices? You’ll see Rishikesh rafting advertised from about ₹600 per person on the 9 km stretch. Before you choose on price alone, check four things: the operator’s 2026 licence, the guide’s training, whether a safety kayak runs with the raft on longer routes, and whether transport and photos are included. Our package comparison guide walks through exactly that.

October Safety & What to Wear

Safety points specific to early-season rafting

  • Driftwood and debris: monsoon floods leave logs and debris in the river. Experienced guides read these hazards and choose their lines around them, so October is not the time for a bargain operator with first-season guides.
  • Faster water early in the month: the first week of October can still feel pushy. Listen closely during the safety briefing and keep your feet up and downstream if you fall in.
  • Cooler water later in the month: on late-October mornings the first splash is a shock. A quick warm-up on the beach before launch helps.
  • Licensed operators only: under the new 2026 licensing, ask to see the operator’s licence. Our safety guidelines cover eligibility, medical restrictions and what the briefing includes.

What to wear and pack in October

  • On the river: quick-dry shorts or track pants and a synthetic T-shirt (no cotton), plus strapped sandals or water shoes.
  • For after the trip: a light fleece or windcheater for the drive back. Late-October afternoons cool quickly once you’re wet.
  • Sun protection: the October sun is strong on the water, so bring waterproof SPF 50 sunscreen and sunglasses with a strap.
  • Leave behind: jewellery, loose phones and anything you can’t afford to get wet.

Booking Tips & What Happens If Rafting Gets Closed

How to book smartly in October 2026

  • Raft on day one of your trip. If a weather pause hits, you have spare days to reschedule.
  • Book a week ahead for holiday weekends. The 2-4 October long weekend and Dussehra on 20 October fill the early slots first.
  • Pick morning slots. There are shorter queues at the starting points, and you’re off the river before afternoon wind picks up.
  • Want a long route? Choose dates from mid-October onwards, or book the 16 km trip with the option to upgrade once Marine Drive or Kaudiyala is cleared.

Our cancellation policy

  • If the river is closed or we cancel for weather: we reschedule your trip, offer an alternative of equal or lesser value, or give a full refund if neither works for you.
  • If you cancel 30+ days before the trip: full refund minus a 10% processing fee.
  • If you cancel 15-29 days before the trip: 50% refund.
  • If you cancel 14 days or less before the trip: no refund, but you can change the date or transfer the booking to someone else, subject to availability.

Frequently Asked Questions: Is Rafting Open in Rishikesh?

Is rafting open in Rishikesh right now?

Yes, the 2026-27 rafting season in Rishikesh is open. It officially began on 23 September 2026. Daily operations still depend on the river: on 26 September 2026 the administration paused rafting under a red weather alert until the Ganga’s water level returned to normal. With IMD forecasting mostly dry weather for Uttarakhand from 2 to 8 October, operations are expected to run through October. Always confirm on the morning of your trip, because one night of heavy rain upstream can pause rafting for a day or two.

When did rafting open in Rishikesh for the 2026-27 season?

Rafting in Rishikesh reopened on 23 September 2026, when the 2026-27 season was formally launched at Shivpuri. Uttarakhand Tourism issued 45-day temporary licences to rafting firms the same day, and the shorter Brahmpuri (9 km) and Shivpuri (16 km) stretches opened first. In 2025 the season restarted on 27 September, so late September is the normal reopening window.

Is rafting open in Rishikesh in October?

Yes. October is fully inside the rafting season and is one of the most reliable months of the year. The monsoon withdraws from Uttarakhand around the start of the month, the river settles, and longer stretches such as Marine Drive (26 km) and Kaudiyala (35 km) usually join the shorter routes as the water drops. Expect daytime temperatures of roughly 28-31°C and water of roughly 16-20°C.

Why is rafting not open in Rishikesh on some days during the season?

Rafting can be paused on any day if the Ganga rises above safe levels, usually after heavy rain upstream or a red alert from the weather department. The district tourism office and Uttarakhand Tourism order these pauses, and they normally last one to three days until the river drops. No licensed operator can run trips during a pause, whatever your booking says.

Which rafting routes are open in Rishikesh after the reopening?

Routes reopen in phases. Brahmpuri to Rishikesh (9 km) and Shivpuri to Rishikesh (16 km) open first. Marine Drive (26 km) and Kaudiyala (35 km) open once the survey team confirms the water has dropped enough, which in a normal year happens during October. Multi-day trips such as the 84 km Ganga expedition run once the upstream stretches are cleared.

How can I check if rafting is open in Rishikesh today or tomorrow?

Call or WhatsApp a licensed rafting operator in Rishikesh on the morning of your trip, check the IMD Uttarakhand weather warnings for any red or orange alert, and look for local news of a suspension order from the district tourism office. Operators receive closure orders first, so they are the fastest source. Message White World Expeditions on WhatsApp and our team will confirm the day’s river status.

Is rafting open in Rishikesh on weekends and holidays in October 2026?

Yes, rafting runs seven days a week, including weekends and public holidays, unless the river is closed for safety. The Gandhi Jayanti long weekend (2-4 October 2026) and Dussehra (Tuesday, 20 October 2026) bring heavy crowds, so book at least a week ahead and take an early morning slot to avoid queues at the starting points.

What are the rafting timings in Rishikesh when it is open?

Rafting in Rishikesh normally runs from about 8 AM to 2 PM, so that every raft is off the river well before dark. Short routes such as Brahmpuri and Shivpuri run in several batches through the day, while long routes such as Kaudiyala start only in the morning. Exact slots vary by operator, and the window shortens slightly as days get shorter from late October.

Until when will rafting stay open in Rishikesh this season?

The 2026-27 season runs until 30 June 2027, when rafting closes for the monsoon. Within that window rafting stays open every month, winter included, with short pauses only for high water or bad weather. The next reopening after the monsoon is expected in September 2027.

What if rafting is not open in Rishikesh on my booked date?

If the authorities close the river or we cancel because of weather, White World Expeditions will reschedule your trip, offer an alternative trip of equal or lesser value, or give a full refund if neither works. Plan rafting for the first day of your stay so that a one-day pause can be moved to the next day without losing the trip.
