White World Expeditions presents the Zanskar River Expedition — India’s most dramatic Leh Ladakh river rafting adventure. This self-contained 150 km descent through the Zanskar Gorge — widely called the Grand Canyon of Asia — is ranked among the world’s top 10 wilderness river journeys.
From Padum in Zanskar Valley to the confluence at Nimoo Sangam where the Zanskar meets the Indus, you paddle and raft through a gorge that is completely inaccessible by road for 3+ days — canyon walls rising 300–900 m overhead, no mobile signal, and the only exit is downstream. The route crosses 30–40 named rapids including Grade IV monsters: Gate Rapid, Constrictor, Chilling 1/2/3 and Champion Killer.
The expedition operates July–September only when water levels are optimal for technical rafting. Nights are spent camping on pristine river beaches under a sky unpolluted by any artificial light for 100 km in any direction — and on Days 1, 6 and 7 in a 4-star hotel in Leh. This is an elite-level India rafting expedition that demands intermediate fitness but rewards with scenery and adventure available nowhere else in India.

Upcoming Zanskar Raft Expedition,
(7Night 8Days) 150Km. Rafting
Upon arrival at Leh Airport, meet your trip leader and transfer to a 4-star hotel in Leh by Innova Crysta or Tempo Traveller.
An early morning departure from Leh by Innova Crysta for the spectacular 200 km drive over Pensi La Pass (4,400 m) — the gateway to the Zanskar Valley. The route passes through Kargil district, with views of the Drang-Drung glacier and Tsarap Chu river canyon. Journey time: 7-8 hours.
Overnight: Camp at Padum.
After breakfast, your IRF-certified expedition leader conducts a final safety briefing, PFD and helmet fitting, and paddle-command walkthrough. Launch on the Doda River — the upper Zanskar tributary — covering roughly 25 km on Grade II rapids as the canyon begins to close in.
Afternoon: first Grade III sections including Zangla Rapid. Optional hike to Zangla Monastery — a 9th-century hilltop gompa. Evening: BBQ dinner, projector session, stargazing. No artificial light for 100 km.
Overnight: Riverside dome-tent camp near Zangla (~3,400 m). Distance on water: 25 km.
Canyon walls begin rising 300+ m above the waterline. The river narrows, current accelerates, Grade III sections become more technical. You are now in one of the most remote stretches of river in India — no road, no signal, no exit except downstream. Named rapids include Constrictor (Grade III+) as the canyon walls close in.
Overnight: Riverside camp at Neyrak. Distance on water: ~25 km.
The most challenging day — canyon walls 600-900 m overhead. Named Grade IV+ rapids today: Gate Rapid (18-foot canyon gap), Constrictor, Screaming Buddha (Grade III+), and Major Surprise (also known as Jackhammer locally). Your IRF-certified guide and safety kayaker are on every rapid; difficult sections scouted and portaged where needed.
Scenic waterfall lunch stop in the gorge.
Overnight: Camp at Lamaguru. Distance on water: ~30 km.
The final and longest rafting day — 40 km to the Nimoo Sangam where the turquoise Zanskar meets the Indus (3,154 m). Key rapids: Chilling 1, 2 and 3 (Grade III-IV), Champion Killer (Grade IV). Pass Chilling Village, the traditional Ladakhi copper and brassware centre. Exit the river at Nimoo and transfer to 4-star hotel in Leh.
Overnight: 4-star hotel in Leh. Total expedition rafting: 150 km.
Guided sightseeing in Leh: Pathar Sahib Gurudwara, Hall of Fame, Thiksey Monastery (12-storey Buddhist gompa), Shanti Stupa (360-degree views), Leh Palace and Leh Market (handicrafts, pashmina, Tibetan jewellery).
Overnight: 4-star hotel in Leh.
Transfer to Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochhe Airport (IXL) for your flight back to Delhi. Expedition concludes here. Airfare Delhi-Leh-Delhi is NOT included — book 2-3 months in advance.
The Zanskar River Expedition operates exclusively in July, August and September — the only window when roads to Padum are open and river levels support safe technical rafting through the gorge.
| Season | Months | Conditions | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early Season | July | High water, strong flow, technical Grade IV+ | Advanced |
| Peak Season | August | Ideal water levels, all rapids fully formed | Best |
| Late Season | September | Lower water, some rapids easier, cooler nights | Good |
The Zanskar Gorge carries Grade III–IV+ whitewater — this is a serious multi-day river expedition, not a leisure float. Days 5 and 6 inside the deep gorge feature the most technical section, with rapids rated Grade IV and no road access or helicopter evacuation possible for ~60 km.
| 🌊 Rafting Grade | Class III–IV+ (Class IV dominant in Days 4–6 deep gorge) |
| 🏃 Fitness Level | Intermediate — swim fitness & core strength required |
| ⛰️ Altitude Range | 3,500 m (Leh) → 4,400 m (Pensi La) → ~3,000 m (river) |
| 🧗 Prior Experience | No prior rafting needed; prior Himalayan travel helpful |
| 💪 Daily Paddling | 4–8 hrs active paddling per day on river days |
| 🩺 Medical | No serious heart/respiratory conditions; consult doctor if in doubt |
Acclimatisation in Leh (Day 1–2) is mandatory and included — the drive to Padum crosses Pensi La at 4,400 m. Guests who fly directly to Leh and attempt the pass without acclimatisation risk acute mountain sickness. We never skip this step.
The Zanskar Gorge is the deepest navigable river gorge in Asia — a 150 km crack in the Himalayan crust where canyon walls soar 300 to 900 metres above river level and sunlight reaches the water for only a few hours each day. Geologists believe the gorge predates the Himalayan uplift itself, carved by the Zanskar over millions of years as the mountains rose around it.
For 3+ consecutive days the gorge is completely inaccessible by road, with no mobile signal and no helicopter landing zone. This is not a marketing claim — it is a geological reality. The nearest road is the Chadar trek winter ice corridor, which follows the same river frozen solid in January. In summer, the only way in or out is the river itself.
All participants fly into Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL), Leh — the only practical entry point. Direct flights operate from Delhi (1h 10m), Mumbai (2h 15m) and Srinagar (30m). We collect you from Leh airport on Day 1.
The Zanskar district is a restricted border zone requiring an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for all visitors — Indian and foreign alike. Foreign nationals from most countries also need a Protected Area Permit (PAP). Both are mandatory and checked at multiple army checkpoints on the Leh–Padum highway.
| Permit | Required by | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Inner Line Permit (ILP) | All Indian & foreign nationals visiting Zanskar district | Included |
| Protected Area Permit (PAP) | Foreign nationals (some nationalities) | Included |
| River Rafting Permit | Commercial rafting operators — per trip | Included |
| Camping/Environmental Fee | Per person per night on river beaches | Included |
| Indian Visa | All foreign nationals before travel | Included |
Permit rules in Ladakh change periodically. Our team monitors all regulatory updates from the Leh District Administration and will notify you of any changes affecting your departure.
