The 42 km Bhagirathi River Rafting expedition is one of the most thrilling white water adventures in the Garhwal Himalayas. This full-day rafting trip begins below the Koteswar Dam and navigates through the spectacular lower Bhagirathi gorge before reaching the sacred confluence at Devprayag – where the Bhagirathi meets the Alaknanda to form the holy Ganga.
The Bhagirathi River originates from the Gangotri Glacier at Gaumukh (meaning “Cow’s Mouth” in Hindi), located at an altitude of 4,023 meters in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Fed by the melting glaciers beneath legendary peaks like Shivling, Meru, and the Bhagirathi massif, the river
carries cold, fast-moving water that creates powerful Grade III to Grade IV rapids – perfect for experienced adventure seekers.
Expedition Highlights:
• Navigate 42 km of continuous white water through the Bhagirathi gorge
• Experience Grade III, III+, and IV rapids including Elephant Rock and The Chute
• Witness the sacred Devprayag Sangam – one of the Panch Prayag pilgrimage sites
• Raft through dramatic Himalayan gorges with views of snow-capped peaks
• Professional IRF-certified guides with Rescue 3 training and safety kayaks
• Riverside lunch break on pristine Himalayan beaches
• All safety equipment: PFD (life jacket), helmet, paddle, and dry bags
This expedition is designed for adventure enthusiasts who have prior rafting experience. The powerful hydraulics and swift currents of the Bhagirathi demand teamwork, physical fitness, and the ability to follow paddle commands precisely.
The Bhagirathi River holds immense spiritual and geographical significance in Hindu mythology. According to legend, King Bhagirath performed intense
penance to bring Goddess Ganga from heaven to earth – an event known as “Ganga Avatarana” (the descent of the Ganga). The river is named in his honor.
Geographic Journey:
The Bhagirathi originates from the snout of the Gangotri Glacier at Gaumukh, one of the largest glaciers in the Himalayas with an estimated volume of 27 cubic kilometers. From here, the river flows approximately 205 km through deep gorges, passing Gangotri town, Uttarkashi, and Tehri before reaching Devprayag.
The Sacred Confluence at Devprayag:
Devprayag is one of the five sacred confluences (Panch Prayag) in Uttarakhand where the milky-blue Bhagirathi merges with the greenish Alaknanda to form the Ganga. This confluence point, visible during your rafting expedition, is a significant Hindu pilgrimage site where devotees gather to perform rituals and seek blessings.
• Cold, glacier-fed water creates powerful rapids
• The river contributes 60% of Ganga’s water flow at Devprayag
• Grade III-IV rapids through scenic gorge sections
• Less crowded than Rishikesh stretches – pristine wilderness experience
• Unique combination of adventure and spiritual significance

Prior rafting experience on Grade II-III rapids is strongly recommended before attempting this expedition.
The 42 km Bhagirathi to Devprayag stretch is NOT recommended for complete beginners due to Grade IV rapids and powerful hydraulics. However, if you’ve completed shorter Grade III rafting trips (16 km Shivpuri or 26 km Marine Drive), you can attempt this expedition. White World Expeditions provides IRF-certified guides, Rescue 3 trained safety kayakers, high-buoyancy PFDs,helmets, and comprehensive safety briefings to maximize participant safety.

Winter months (December-February) feature colder glacier water but fewer crowds; wetsuits are provided. Rafting is closed
during monsoon (July-September) due to dangerous flood conditions.
The 42 km Bhagirathi River rafting expedition with White World Expeditions costs ₹3,500-₹4,500 per person.
