Gangotri has been a place of pilgrimage. According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath spent years in penance here praying for the River Goddess Ganga to descend upon the drought ravaged land. It is from this myth that the river takes the name Bhagirathi. The name Ganga applies only beyond Devprayag after the Bhagirathi has merged with the Alaknanda.
The River Ganges is the most holy of the rivers for the Hindus. It is believed that a holy dip in its waters cleanses one of all his sins, ensuring a place for him in heaven! With all the religious significance and interesting mythology attached to it, it makes for an interesting trip to the source of the Ganges- the 'Gaumukh glacier'.
