Day 1: Journey to Rishikesh
Take the train or flight to Dehradun and after 40min drive reach Rishikesh. Overnight stay and leisure in the hotel.
Drive 12kms / 1 hr from Sankri to Taluka (1800m) on a narrow road and trek 4 hrs till Khapu Gad. From Taluka, the trail descends to the river valley and continues through the forest on the true side of the valley. In spring, there are plenty of Gujar (pastorals with buffalo herd) camping as they make their way to the higher pastures at the head of the valley. After having walked for about an hour along the river the trail climbs steepily up towards the village of Datmir. We bypass the village and walk for a little more than an hour to reach the campsite. Dinner and overnight at camp.
The path continues winding through the forest until the village of Gangar appears on the opposite side of the valley. We descend to the valley floor and then walk along the river till we see the village of Osla on the other side. There is an option to go through the village or to bypass it completely. We camp a half an hour outside in the village fields.Overnight camp.
The path goes above the valley floor constantly gaining altitude and gets prettier. Har-ki-dun is a cradle shaped valley surrounded by pine forests and high Himalayan peaks. Overnight Camp / stay in a Guest House if it is really cold.
We trek downhill to our campsite outside Osla village and cross the stream to climb up to Dev thach. Dev thach is a big grassy terrace surrounded by the forests just above the confluence of the Har-ki-doon & Ruinsara streams.
This is going to be a long day, atleast 8 to 9 hrs of walking. One does'nt necessarily need to go till the lake. You could do a day hike in that valley & come back. The trail leads through mixed forest and meadows of forget-me-nots and buttercups. Halfway to the lake, the valley widens and crosses a series of flowered meadows where shepherds from the nearby villages graze their flocks in the summer. However there would be no flowers at this time of the year. Ruinsara Lake is considered sacred by the surrounding villages. It is above the main valley floor on the true side, surrounded by alpine pastures and low rhododendrons beneath the impressive Swargarohini Range.
Long walk down to the campsite of Bheduka. We walk all along the river till we get to Bhedaka just short of Taluka, the road head.
Drive back to Rishikesh and join evening Ganga arti at Parmarth Niketan. Overnight in the Hotel.
